Terminology

The lexicon.
Every term, defined once.

66 terms for Shopify search and AI commerce, each defined in one sentence that stands on its own. An industry term is defined the way the field uses it, with its primary source; a Rank Sniper term means exactly what Rank Sniper’s code means by it, and nothing broader.

LX-00Organising rule

Two kinds of term.

Industry term — used across the field and defined here the way the field uses it. External facts come from the vendor’s or standard body’s own documentation, cited on the entry.

Rank Sniper term — means exactly what Rank Sniper’s scoring code, check registry or release table means by it, and names the published page that defines it. Where it names a capability, the badge beside it is read from the release table.

The four disciplines sit between the two: industry words with no agreed meaning, so each carries the definition Rank Sniper states and scores.

01 // The four disciplines

SEO, AEO, GEO, AIO.
Defined, then scored.

The field uses these four acronyms loosely and inconsistently. Rank Sniper states one definition for each, always in this order, and scores a store against exactly that definition.

SEO

AlsoSearch engine optimisation · Search engine optimization

Whether conventional search engines can crawl, parse, and rank the catalogue.

Field notes2 notes · 6 related · authority

The field has no consensus meaning for this term; this is the definition Rank Sniper states and scores. The SEO pillar (pillar layer v1.0) is 9 checks — Title length and uniqueness, sitemap.xml validity, Meta description, Product type set, Canonical tags, H1 structure, Tag richness, Alt-text coverage and URL structure — with weights summing to 100.

A robots.txt that fully disallows Googlebot and Bingbot costs this pillar 6 points per crawler, capped at 30; search-crawler blocks never touch the composite. Backlinks, domain authority and link graphs are out of scope by choice: Rank Sniper does not fetch, estimate or score them.

AEO

AlsoAnswer engine optimisation · Answer engine optimization

Whether the catalogue can be lifted as a direct answer to a shopper's question.

Field notes2 notes · 5 related · 1 source

The field has no consensus meaning for this term; this is the definition Rank Sniper states and scores. The term has no single canonical origin; it is used loosely across the industry. The AEO pillar (pillar layer v1.0) is 5 checks — Description depth, FAQPage / HowTo schema, List and table density, Answer-first structure and Question-shaped headings — with weights summing to 86.

The FAQPage / HowTo check is scored as evidence that answer content is structured as questions and answers — not as a promise of a rich result. Google removed the How-to rich result in 2023, and FAQ rich results no longer appear in Google Search from 7 May 2026.

GEO

AlsoGenerative engine optimisation · Generative engine optimization

Whether generative engines will cite this store when composing a recommendation.

Field notes2 notes · 6 related · 1 source

The academic term comes from “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization” (Aggarwal et al., accepted to KDD 2024). The field has no consensus meaning for this term; this is the definition Rank Sniper states and scores. The GEO pillar (pillar layer v1.0) is 5 checks — llms.txt presence and quality, Vendor and provenance attribution, Quotable claim density, Freshness (updated_at) and Named entities — with weights summing to 82.

Each of the 10 AI agents the scan checks that robots.txt fully disallows subtracts 6 points from this pillar and from the composite, capped at 30 — a capped penalty in the score. Rank Sniper does not measure whether any engine actually cites a store, and does not claim to know how any engine chooses its sources.

AIO

AlsoAI optimisation · AI optimization

Whether an AI system can correctly parse and act on the record without guessing. Includes transactability as a named sub-score.

Field notes2 notes · 6 related · authority

The field has no consensus meaning for this term; this is the definition Rank Sniper states and scores. AIO here means machine readability — whether the record parses and can be acted on. It is not the umbrella definition that treats AIO as all four disciplines at once, and it is not the off-site trust definition.

The AIO pillar (pillar layer v1.0) is 10 checks — Structured attributes, SKU coverage, Variant-level offers, Price with priceCurrency, Availability in schema, Shipping weight, Imagery present, Real variant options, Schema conflict detection and Entity consistency — with weights summing to 108. 5 of them are also scored on their own as the transactability sub-score.

Rank Score

AlsoCanonical Rank Score

The Rank Score is the canonical four-pillar score Rank Sniper is building: one versioned scoring contract for SEO, AEO, GEO and AIO, shared by every surface.

In developmentCanonical four-pillar Rank Score (one versioned scoring contract)
Field notes2 notes · 5 related · authority

It is not live, and nothing Rank Sniper shows today is presented as the Rank Score. Until it ships, two layers are reported, each labelled as what it is: the legibility score (rubric v1.0) and the four pillar scores (pillar layer v1.0).

One contract comes first on purpose: custom pillar weighting (Planned) waits on it, so that no two surfaces can compute a different number for the same store.

LX-06Rank Sniper termProduct authority

Legibility score

AlsoComposite score · Composite

The legibility score is Rank Sniper’s published composite (rubric v1.0): catalogue checks blended 80%/20% with structured data, less a capped crawler penalty, rounded, floor 1.

AvailablePublic store scan — composite and four pillar scores
Field notes2 notes · 6 related · authority

9 catalogue checks, each applied to the share of products that pass it, carry weights summing to 95 — published as they are, not rescaled. The structured-data sub-score is out of 100: 40 for Product JSON-LD, 20 for offers, 20 for availability and 20 for shipping details or a return policy. The catalogue total counts 80%, the structured-data total 20%.

Then 6 points come off per blocked AI agent, capped at 30 (reached at 5 agents), and the result is rounded with a floor of 1. Because the catalogue weights sum to 95, the highest composite the formula can return is 96 and the lowest is 1. It is the headline number of the free scan, shown beside the four pillar scores.

Pillar score

AlsoSEO score · AEO score · GEO score · AIO score

A pillar score rates a store on one of the four disciplines out of 100: the weighted share of that pillar’s checks it passes, counting only checks whose inputs could be read.

AvailablePublic store scan — composite and four pillar scores
Field notes2 notes · 5 related · authority

The pillar layer (v1.0) re-cuts the same audit the composite reads into 29 checks. Weights are relative within a pillar and are not rescaled: they sum to SEO 100 · AEO 86 · GEO 82 · AIO 108.

Pillars do not sum to the composite, and this layer cannot change it. The SEO pillar subtracts 6 points per blocked search crawler and the GEO pillar 6 per blocked AI agent, each capped at 30; AEO and AIO carry no penalty.

Rank Preview

AlsoSEO Preview · AEO Preview · GEO Preview · AIO Preview

Rank Preview is a set of SEO, AEO, GEO and AIO Preview scores, plus an overall Rank Preview, designed for the free scan and stated with the coverage each was computed on.

In developmentRank Preview — SEO, AEO, GEO and AIO Preview scores with stated coverage
Field notes2 notes · 5 related · authority

It is designed so that a public number never passes for the full authenticated assessment: a preview computed from what a public scan can reach says so, and names what it could not read.

Until it ships, the free scan reports the legibility score and the four pillar scores, labelled as what they are.

LX-09Rank Sniper termProduct authority

Rubric

AlsoLegibility rubric · Rubric v1.0 · Methodology

The rubric is Rank Sniper’s published scoring definition — the checks, weights, blend and penalty behind the legibility score — versioned (now v1.0) and published at /rubric.

Field notes2 notes · 5 related · authority

Any change to its weights, blend or penalty requires a version bump and a re-publish, so a score can always be traced to the rules that produced it.

It sits beside two other versioned layers: the pillar layer (v1.0) and the check registry (v1.4-draft), which defines 58 checks, of which 11 are scored today.

Defined by
LX-10Rank Sniper termProduct authority

Check

AlsoCriterion · Registry check

A check is one defined test Rank Sniper runs against a store, with an ID, a pillar, the surface it reads, a pass condition, a fix class and a source.

Field notes2 notes · 5 related · authority

A check moves a score only when all three hold: it is independently sourced, the scanner implements it (proven to fail before and pass after on a test fixture), and it carries a weight. Of the 58 checks in registry v1.4-draft, 11 are scored, 45 are experimental — defined but not yet computed, so they touch no score — and 2 are informational, reported but by ruling never scored.

The pillar layer scores 29 checks across the four pillars; each is listed with its weight on the rubric.

Defined by
LX-11Rank Sniper termProduct authority

Finding

AlsoFailing check

A finding is a scored check a store fails, reported with what the check read, how many products fail it, named examples, and a recommendation for fixing it.

Field notes2 notes · 5 related · authority

Findings are listed per pillar in weight order, heaviest first. A recommendation appears only on a failing check, and each carries its fix class, so it is clear whether the fix would publish on its own, wait for approval, or need the merchant to act.

An unscored check is never a finding: a check that could not run makes no claim about the store.

Defined by
LX-12Rank Sniper termProduct authority

Coverage

AlsoStated coverage · Scan coverage

Coverage is the set of checks a score was actually computed on: an input that could not be read is excluded from the score rather than counted as a zero.

Field notes2 notes · 5 related · authority

A zero is a claim that the store failed. Scoring a check Rank Sniper never ran would make that claim without evidence, so each pillar normalises over the checks that were fed. A 404 is different: a missing sitemap.xml or llms.txt is an observed absence, and it is scored.

Rank Preview is designed to publish coverage beside every preview score. Today, 40 of 58 registry checks read only what a public scan can reach; the other 18 need the Shopify Admin API through a connected scan.

Defined by
LX-13Rank Sniper termProduct authority

Unscored check

AlsoExcluded check

An unscored check is one whose input could not be fetched or judged on this scan, so it is left out of its pillar’s denominator and makes no claim about the store.

Field notes2 notes · 4 related · authority

The reasons the pillar code records include: the product-page <head> could not be read; sitemap.xml or llms.txt could not be fetched; no products could be read; no images were found on the sampled product pages to judge alt text. Each pillar result carries its unscored checks by name and never counts them against the store.

Unscored is not experimental. An experimental check is defined in the registry but not computed by the scanner at all.

LX-14Rank Sniper termProduct authority

Crawler penalty

AlsoBlocked-crawler penalty

The crawler penalty subtracts 6 points for each named agent that robots.txt fully disallows, capped at 30: a capped deduction in the score, not a removal of the store from it.

AvailableAI-crawler policy read from robots.txt
Field notes2 notes · 5 related · 2 sources

In the composite it counts the 10 AI agents the scan checks — GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, anthropic-ai, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, Applebot-Extended, Bytespider and CCBot — and stops growing at 5 blocked agents. The GEO pillar applies the same arithmetic. Googlebot and Bingbot blocks are counted separately, against the SEO pillar only, and never touch the composite.

The penalty is the same for every listed agent whatever its role, including Google-Extended and Applebot-Extended, which are control tokens rather than separate crawlers. Outside the score, a crawler that is disallowed does not read the store, so whatever it feeds has nothing of the store to draw on.

Transactability

AlsoTransactability sub-score

Transactability is the AIO sub-score for whether an agent could act on a product record — quote it, identify it, deliver it — rather than merely describe it.

AvailablePublic store scan — composite and four pillar scores
Field notes2 notes · 5 related · authority

It is the same check objects as the AIO pillar, scored on their own: SKU coverage (14), Variant-level offers (12), Price with priceCurrency (12), Availability in schema (12) and Shipping weight (10). Because they are the same objects, a value cannot disagree between the pillar and the sub-score. It is a named sub-score under AIO, not a fifth pillar.

An agent that cannot resolve price, currency or availability, or has no stable identifier for what is being bought, can describe a product but not act on it. Rank Sniper scores whether those fields are present; it does not test a checkout.

LX-16Rank Sniper termProduct authority

Fix class

AlsoAutomatic · Assisted · Guided

The fix class says how a failing check would be fixed and what approval it needs: automatic, assisted or guided.

Field notes2 notes · 6 related · authority

Automatic: Published through Rank Sniper’s own metafield namespace, structured data or feed. Designed to need no approval, because it never touches a field you wrote. Assisted: Changes a native Shopify field — a title, description, tag, image or variant field. Drafted and staged; written only when you approve and apply it. Guided: Outside the app’s write scope — a theme template, a file at your domain root. You make the change from exact instructions; the next scan checks it.

Across the 29 pillar checks the design assigns 4 automatic, 20 assisted and 5 guided. These describe the design; no fix is applied by Rank Sniper today — Automatic fixes — app-block structured-data markup: Planned; Automatic fixes — metadata and restructures: Planned; Assisted batch rewrites, applied on merchant approval: Planned.

Verification

AlsoPost-fix verification

Verification is the designed post-fix step that re-fetches a store as agents receive it and confirms a change actually reached the delivered page.

PlannedPost-fix verification — what agents actually receive
Field notes2 notes · 5 related · authority

It is designed to re-fetch the delivered HTML after a fix — raw, without JavaScript, and as each declared AI user agent — because structured data injected only by JavaScript is invisible to a crawler that does not run it.

Until it ships, the only confirmation is running the scan again, which reads the live storefront.

Rollback

AlsoVersioned rollback

Rollback is the designed ability to restore any field Rank Sniper writes to its prior value, stored before the write happens, with per-product restore.

PlannedVersioned rollback on every write
Field notes2 notes · 5 related · authority

It is designed to ship before the first automatic fix does, and to cover assisted fixes too, because those change native Shopify fields that the theme and other apps also read.

Nothing has been written to any merchant’s store, so there is nothing to roll back today.

Release state

AlsoAvailable · Beta · Private Beta · Planned · In development · Coming soon

A release state is one of 6 public labels — Available, Beta, Private Beta, Planned, In development, Coming soon — that every Rank Sniper page reads from one table to say whether a capability exists.

Field notes2 notes · 5 related · authority

A state changes only when the evidence behind it changes, and each capability in the table cites that evidence. A page never states availability in its own words.

Crawler

AlsoBot · Spider · Web crawler

A crawler is an automated client that fetches web pages for a purpose its operator defines — a search index, model training, an answer, a link preview — and names itself with a user-agent token.

Field notes2 notes · 5 related · 3 sources

Vendors document their crawlers by purpose, and one operator often runs several. OpenAI lists four tokens and says each setting is independent of the others; Google separates its common crawlers, which honour robots.txt, from user-triggered fetchers, which generally ignore it.

Rank Sniper’s own crawler is RankSniperBot. It reads robots.txt before anything else, stops if it is disallowed, and fetches a handful of public pages per scan rather than crawling the store.

User-agent

AlsoUser-Agent header · Product token · UA

A user-agent is the name a client sends with each request, and the token robots.txt rules are grouped under — GPTBot, ClaudeBot or Googlebot, for example.

Field notes2 notes · 4 related · 2 sources

robots.txt matches a crawler to its rules by that token, so spelling matters, and a vendor’s documented token is the one to use. A user-agent string can be spoofed — Common Crawl notes crawlers falsely identifying themselves as CCBot — which is why several vendors, OpenAI among them, publish the IP ranges their crawlers use.

Rank Sniper’s crawler sends RankSniperBot/1.0 (+https://ranksniperhq.com/bot) on every request, with the address of its identity page, so a server log says who it was and how to stop it.

robots.txt

AlsoRobots Exclusion Protocol · REP · RFC 9309

robots.txt is the plain-text file at a site’s root that tells crawlers, by user-agent, which paths they may fetch — the Robots Exclusion Protocol, standardised as RFC 9309.

Field notes2 notes · 6 related · 3 sources

Under RFC 9309 the most specific (longest) matching rule wins, and where an allow and a disallow are equivalent the allow should be used; crawlers should not rely on a cached copy for more than 24 hours. It is not access control: the RFC says it is no substitute for security measures, and Google says it is not a mechanism for keeping a page out of Google — noindex or password protection is.

Shopify generates a default robots.txt for every store; a theme changes it by adding a robots.txt.liquid template. Rank Sniper reads it first, parses it by group, and records which of the 10 named AI agents and Googlebot and Bingbot are fully disallowed.

sitemap.xml

AlsoXML sitemap · Sitemap index

sitemap.xml is a machine-readable list of a site’s URLs that helps crawlers find its pages; Shopify generates one automatically at /sitemap.xml for every store.

Field notes2 notes · 5 related · 1 source

Shopify’s sitemap links to all products (with the primary product image), pages, collections and blog posts, in child sitemaps by type; it updates as content is added, international domains get their own, and a password-protected store’s sitemap cannot be read by crawlers.

Rank Sniper’s SEO pillar scores sitemap.xml validity (weight 14): a parseable urlset or sitemap index with at least one URL passes; a file that is present but unparseable earns partial credit; a 404 is scored as absent; a fetch that fails outright is unscored. Shopify serves the file, so the fix is guided.

Canonical URL

Alsorel="canonical" · Canonical tag

A canonical URL is the address a page declares, with <link rel="canonical">, as the preferred one when the same content can be reached at several URLs.

Field notes2 notes · 4 related · 2 sources

Where several URLs serve the same product and nothing settles which is canonical, the index picks one itself — Google says it will choose the version it judges best. A canonical link states the preference; Google treats it as a strong signal rather than a command.

Rank Sniper’s SEO pillar checks each sampled product page for a canonical link in absolute form (weight 10). Canonical tags are written by the theme template, which the app does not edit, so the fix is guided: the exact tag and the file it belongs in.

Crawlability

AlsoCrawl access

Crawlability is whether a crawler is permitted and able to fetch a page: allowed by robots.txt, reachable, and answered with the content rather than an error or a block.

Field notes2 notes · 5 related · 2 sources

Permission and delivery are separate. robots.txt states policy; a firewall, CDN rule or bot filter decides delivery, and can refuse an agent that robots.txt allows. Rank Sniper reads policy today. Testing what each declared AI agent is actually served is an experimental registry check, not scored.

Delivery failures have documented effects: Google does not use content from a URL that answers with a 4xx status, and 429 or 5xx responses make its crawlers slow down. Rank Sniper’s own crawler records which path served each scan; if a declared request is hard-refused it retries that one request with a standard browser profile — never for a path robots.txt disallows.

Indexability

AlsoIndex eligibility

Indexability is whether a page a crawler has fetched is eligible to be stored and shown by a search index — not marked noindex, not an error, and not deferring to another canonical URL.

Field notes2 notes · 5 related · 1 source

It is not the same as crawlability. Google states robots.txt is not a mechanism for keeping a page out of Google, and that noindex or password protection is.

Rank Sniper’s registry defines an indexability check — no noindex on live product URLs, and /products/ not disallowed for Googlebot. It is experimental and does not affect any score today.

Discoverability

AlsoURL discovery

Discoverability is whether a crawler can find a URL at all — through links, a sitemap or a direct submission — before any question of fetching or indexing it arises.

Field notes2 notes · 4 related · 3 sources

On Shopify the sitemap is the dependable route, because it is generated automatically and lists every product. Without a valid sitemap an index has to reach the catalogue by following links, and products deep in it are the hardest to reach.

Some engines accept direct notification of changed URLs. IndexNow shares one submission across participating engines; its site lists Microsoft Bing, Naver, Seznam.cz, Yandex and Yep (its FAQ adds Amazon), and Google is not listed.

04 // Structured data

Structured data.
The record, in markup.

The machine-readable description of a product that sits in the page beside the human one — what Google documents for it, and what Rank Sniper reads from raw HTML.

04 / 07Structured data8 termsCategories Next: AI systems
LX-29Industry termSourced · 2

Structured data

AlsoSchema markup · Structured markup

Structured data is machine-readable markup, usually schema.org vocabulary in JSON-LD, that states a page’s facts — product, price, availability — as fields rather than prose.

Field notes2 notes · 6 related · 2 sources

Google says no special schema.org markup is needed to appear in its generative AI features in Search, and that structured data remains useful for rich-result eligibility. Rank Sniper does not claim otherwise. It scores structured data because it is the form in which a parser can read a price or an availability without guessing.

The scan fetches up to three product pages as raw HTML with no JavaScript executed, so markup a script injects later is not counted. The composite’s structured-data sub-score is out of 100; the AIO pillar adds price with priceCurrency and a check for conflicting prices or availability on one page.

JSON-LD

AlsoJSON for Linking Data · application/ld+json

JSON-LD is a JSON format for linked data, embedded in a page as a <script type="application/ld+json"> block — the format Rank Sniper reads structured data from.

Field notes3 notes · 5 related · 2 sources

Rank Sniper parses every application/ld+json block as JSON and walks it, @graph wrappers and array @type values included; a malformed block falls back to pattern matching rather than being ignored. It does not read microdata or RDFa.

Nodes can reference one another by @id, which is how a Product, its Organization and its page connect into one entity graph. Checking that graph is an experimental registry check, not scored.

JSON-LD is a W3C Recommendation (JSON-LD 1.1), and Google recommends it for structured data where a site’s setup allows, because the markup sits apart from the visible text and is easier to maintain at scale.

LX-31Industry termSourced · 3

schema.org

AlsoSchema.org vocabulary

schema.org is a shared vocabulary of types and properties — Product, Offer, ProductGroup, FAQPage, DefinedTerm — that structured data uses to say what a thing is.

Field notes2 notes · 5 related · 3 sources

Each type has its own definition. DefinedTerm, for example, is “a word, name, acronym, phrase, etc. with a formal definition”, collected in a DefinedTermSet; this lexicon publishes each entry as a DefinedTerm whose description is the definition shown on the page.

Search engines document which types and properties they use and for what. Google’s merchant listing documentation, for example, requires name, image and offers on a Product.

Product schema

AlsoProduct markup · schema.org/Product

Product schema is schema.org Product markup describing one item — name, image, brand, identifiers and offers — in a form search engines and agents can parse.

Field notes2 notes · 6 related · 1 source

For merchant listings Google requires name, image and offers on the Product, and a price above zero with an ISO 4217 priceCurrency on the Offer; availability, itemCondition, url, shippingDetails and hasMerchantReturnPolicy are recommended.

Rank Sniper’s composite awards 40 of its 100 structured-data points for Product JSON-LD on a sampled page, 20 for offers, 20 for availability and 20 for shipping details or a return policy. It recognises Product, ProductGroup, ProductModel, IndividualProduct and SomeProducts as product markup. GTIN and MPN are read but not scored in rubric v1.0.

Offer

Alsoschema.org/Offer · offers

An Offer is the schema.org node that states the terms on which a product is sold — price, priceCurrency, availability — nested in Product markup under offers.

Field notes2 notes · 5 related · 1 source

Google’s merchant listing documentation requires price and priceCurrency on the Offer. A price with no currency is ambiguous, and an agent that cannot resolve the currency cannot quote it.

Rank Sniper’s AIO pillar checks that the Product node carries offers (weight 12), that price and priceCurrency appear together (12) and that availability is stated (12). Two different prices or availabilities on one page are scored as a conflict (8), because a parser that finds both cannot pick either.

LX-34Industry termSourced · 1

ProductGroup

Alsoschema.org/ProductGroup · Variant group

ProductGroup is the schema.org type for a parent product whose variants differ by attributes such as size or colour, listing each variant under hasVariant.

Field notes2 notes · 4 related · 1 source

Google documents it for product variants: name is required; hasVariant holds nested Product nodes; variesBy names the attributes that differ; productGroupID is the parent SKU.

It is the shape Rank Sniper most often finds on Shopify stores with size or colour variants, and it counts as product markup. An earlier version of the parser treated it as no schema at all; that detection bug is fixed.

FAQPage schema

AlsoFAQ schema · FAQPage · FAQ markup

FAQPage is the schema.org type for a page of questions with accepted answers; Google no longer shows FAQ rich results in Search, so it is an answer-structure signal, not a rich result.

Field notes2 notes · 4 related · 2 sources

Google limited FAQ rich results to well-known, authoritative government and health sites in 2023, then stopped showing them: the feature no longer appears in Google Search from 7 May 2026, and its documentation was removed in June 2026. The type itself remains valid schema.org.

Rank Sniper’s AEO pillar scores the presence of FAQPage, HowTo or QAPage in a sampled page’s JSON-LD (weight 20) as evidence that answer content is structured as questions and answers — never as a promise of any rich result. The fix is assisted: the questions and answers have to be the merchant’s own.

GTIN

AlsoGlobal Trade Item Number · UPC · EAN · ISBN · Barcode

A GTIN is a Global Trade Item Number — the barcode number, such as a UPC, EAN or ISBN, that identifies a product across retailers, catalogues and feeds.

Field notes2 notes · 5 related · 3 sources

Google Merchant Center lists gtin as strongly recommended, not required: omit it if unsure, and supply an MPN where there is no GTIN. OpenAI’s product feed specification requires a gtin or an mpn. Shopify holds it in the barcode field, whose types include GTIN (8, 12, 13 or 14 digits), UPC, EAN, ISBN, ASIN and custom.

Rank Sniper reads gtin and mpn when they appear in Product JSON-LD but does not score them in rubric v1.0. Checking a valid GTIN, or MPN plus brand, per variant is an experimental registry check that needs a connected scan — Connected scan through the Shopify Admin API: Planned.

AI crawler

AlsoAI bot · AI user-agent

An AI crawler is a crawler an AI company operates; vendors document distinct kinds — training crawlers, search-index crawlers and user-initiated fetchers — each under its own token.

Field notes2 notes · 6 related · 4 sources

The kinds are controlled separately. OpenAI states each of its settings is independent, so blocking GPTBot (training) does not block OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT search). Control tokens such as Google-Extended and Applebot-Extended are not crawlers at all, but robots.txt names that govern how content fetched by another crawler may be used.

The scan checks exactly 10 AI tokens: GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, anthropic-ai, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, Applebot-Extended, Bytespider and CCBot. Tokens not on that list — Claude-SearchBot, Claude-User and Perplexity-User among them — are not checked. Changing the list changes scores, so it moves with a rubric version.

LX-38Industry termSourced · 5

Training crawler

AlsoAI training crawler

A training crawler collects web content that may be used to train an AI company’s foundation models; disallowing it in robots.txt is the documented opt-out from that use.

Field notes2 notes · 5 related · 5 sources

Documented examples: OpenAI’s GPTBot (“disallowing GPTBot indicates a site’s content should not be used in training”), Anthropic’s ClaudeBot (a blocked site’s future materials “should be excluded” from training datasets), Mistral’s MistralAI-Training and Meta’s meta-externalagent. Amazon says Amazonbot may be used to train AI models. Blocking one is a separate decision from blocking the same company’s search or user-initiated agents.

The scan checks GPTBot and ClaudeBot; MistralAI-Training, meta-externalagent and Amazonbot are not on its list. A block on a checked agent costs 6 points under the capped penalty, whatever the reason for it.

LX-39Industry termSourced · 6

AI search crawler

AlsoAI retrieval crawler · Search-index crawler

An AI search crawler builds the index an AI assistant searches when it answers, so blocking it can keep a site out of that assistant’s answers, separately from any training opt-out.

Field notes2 notes · 5 related · 6 sources

OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot “will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links”. Perplexity says PerplexityBot surfaces and links websites and is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models. Anthropic documents Claude-SearchBot, Amazon Amzn-SearchBot, DuckDuckGo DuckAssistBot and Mistral MistralAI-Index for the same class of job.

The scan checks OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot; Claude-SearchBot, Amzn-SearchBot, DuckAssistBot and MistralAI-Index are not on its list.

LX-40Industry termSourced · 6

User-initiated fetch

AlsoUser-triggered fetcher · Assistant fetch

A user-initiated fetch is a request an AI assistant makes because a person asked it to — reading a specific page for an answer or an action — rather than an automatic crawl.

Field notes2 notes · 5 related · 6 sources

Vendors differ on whether robots.txt applies. OpenAI says robots.txt rules “may not apply” to ChatGPT-User; Perplexity says Perplexity-User “generally ignores robots.txt rules”; Google says its user-triggered fetchers, Google-Agent among them, generally ignore robots.txt; Meta says meta-externalfetcher “may bypass robots.txt”; Amazon says Amzn-User may not follow all robots.txt directives. Anthropic states that its bots honour robots.txt and names no exception for Claude-User.

The scan checks ChatGPT-User; Claude-User and Perplexity-User are not on its list. A disallow for a checked agent counts in the penalty like any other, even where the vendor says the rule may not stop the fetch.

LX-41Industry termSourced · 3

Control token

AlsoGoogle-Extended · Applebot-Extended

A control token is a robots.txt user-agent name that fetches nothing itself but tells a company how content its other crawlers fetch may be used, for example to train AI models.

Field notes2 notes · 5 related · 3 sources

Google-Extended governs whether content Google crawls may be used to train future Gemini models and for grounding; Google says it does not affect inclusion or ranking in Google Search, and it does not govern AI Overviews or AI Mode — Googlebot’s robots.txt rules are the control there, with nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex limiting what is shown. Applebot-Extended opts content out of training Apple’s foundation models; Apple says it does not crawl webpages, and disallowed pages can still appear in search results.

The scan checks Google-Extended and Applebot-Extended. A disallow for a checked token costs 6 points under the capped penalty, the same as a crawler block.

Retrieval

AlsoRetrieval-augmented generation · RAG

Retrieval is the step in which an AI system looks up documents — in its own search index or with a live fetch — to give a model source material before it writes an answer.

Field notes2 notes · 5 related · 2 sources

It is why one company runs separate agents: a search-index crawler builds what is retrieved later, and a user-initiated fetcher retrieves a page at answer time. A store that blocks both, or serves its product facts only through JavaScript, gives retrieval nothing to return.

How any engine ranks or selects retrieved documents is not published, and Rank Sniper does not claim to know it.

LX-43Industry termSourced · 1

Grounding

AlsoAnswer grounding

Grounding is supplying a generative model with retrieved source material at answer time, so that its answer rests on — and can point to — that material rather than on training alone.

Field notes2 notes · 4 related · 1 source

Google uses the term in its crawler documentation: Google-Extended governs whether content may be used to train Gemini models “and for grounding”.

A system can only ground an answer in facts a page actually states. Rank Sniper’s AEO, GEO and AIO checks score whether a product record states them explicitly — price with currency, availability, material, dimensions, a named vendor.

AlsoSource attribution

A citation is an AI answer’s attribution to a source, usually a link, showing which page a statement or recommendation was drawn from.

Field notes2 notes · 5 related · 2 sources

Vendors describe this for their own products: Perplexity says Perplexity-User may “include a link to the page in its response”; OpenAI says sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot can still appear as navigational links.

Answer engine

AlsoAnswer-first search

An answer engine responds to a question with a direct answer composed from sources, rather than with a ranked list of links for the reader to open.

Field notes2 notes · 4 related

The term, like “answer engine optimisation”, has no single canonical origin and is used loosely across the industry. Rank Sniper uses it for systems that lift a quotable passage as the answer.

That is what the AEO pillar scores for: Description depth, FAQPage / HowTo schema, List and table density, Answer-first structure and Question-shaped headings.

Generative engine

AlsoGenerative search engine

A generative engine is a search system that uses a generative model to compose one synthesised answer from retrieved sources, rather than returning a list of results.

The term was framed academically in “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization” (Aggarwal, Murahari, Rajpurohit, Kalyan, Narasimhan and Deshpande; arXiv 2311.09735, accepted to KDD 2024), which studied how content can be made more visible in generative engine responses.

llms.txt

Also/llms.txt · LLMS.txt

llms.txt is a proposed Markdown file at a site’s root that summarises the site for language models and links its key pages; it is a community proposal, not a standard.

Field notes2 notes · 5 related · 5 sources

Proposed by Jeremy Howard in September 2024 and revised as a v2 of the proposal in August 2026, the format requires only an H1, with an optional blockquote summary and sections of Markdown links. Google states that Google Search ignores llms.txt files, so they neither help nor harm visibility there. The crawler documentation of OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity does not mention consuming them.

Rank Sniper’s GEO pillar scores it (weight 20) as a cheap, explicit statement of a store’s terms, not as a known ranking factor: present earns partial credit, present and pointing at the catalogue earns full credit, and an HTML page served at /llms.txt does not count. Publishing it at the domain root is outside an app’s write scope, so the fix is guided.

Machine readability

AlsoMachine-readable · Legibility

Machine readability is whether software can parse a record and act on it without guessing — the sense in which Rank Sniper uses AIO.

Field notes2 notes · 5 related · authority

AIO here means machine readability — whether the record parses and can be acted on. It is not the umbrella definition that treats AIO as all four disciplines at once, and it is not the off-site trust definition.

It depends on what the server returns before any JavaScript runs: the scan reads raw HTML, as a crawler that does not execute scripts would, so structured data injected only by a script is not seen. Contradictory markup is worse than absent markup — a parser that finds two prices cannot pick one — so a conflict is scored as a failure.

DescriptiveNo standard body defines machine readability for commerce records. This entry states the sense Rank Sniper uses and scores under AIO; it is not presented as an industry standard.

Entity

AlsoNamed entity

An entity is a distinct, nameable thing — a brand, material, standard or place — that a system can recognise and connect across sources, rather than an unstructured word.

Field notes2 notes · 4 related · 1 source

Rank Sniper’s GEO pillar scores named entities (weight 14): whether a product’s title or description names a material, standard or provenance — merino, stoneware, OEKO-TEX, “made in”.

The AIO pillar scores entity consistency (weight 8): whether each product’s vendor agrees with the catalogue’s dominant vendors, because inconsistent names split one brand into several as far as a model is concerned.

Freshness

Alsoupdated_at · Recency

Freshness is how recently a record was genuinely updated; for a Shopify product Rank Sniper reads it from the updated_at timestamp that /products.json returns.

Field notes2 notes · 4 related · 2 sources

Rank Sniper’s GEO pillar scores the share of products updated within the last year (weight 16), reading updated_at, or published_at where that is missing. A timestamp should reflect a real change, so the designed fix refreshes only records where something actually changed.

AI shopping

AlsoShopping in AI assistants · Conversational commerce

AI shopping is product discovery and purchase inside an AI assistant: the assistant finds and compares products for a shopper and, where the platform supports it, checks out.

Field notes2 notes · 4 related · 3 sources

Shopify’s own statements are dated and have changed. Its Winter ’26 Edition (10 December 2025) listed ChatGPT, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot as available through Agentic Storefronts. Its explainer of 18 June 2026 describes ChatGPT as live for Shopify merchants selling to US buyers, Copilot as live for Catalog merchants selling to US buyers, and AI Mode in Google Search and the Gemini app as available to select brands selling to US buyers; it does not mention Perplexity.

Google’s checkout on eligible listings in AI Mode and Gemini is an early-access programme for select merchants in the US, Canada and Australia. The current status of OpenAI’s Instant Checkout could not be confirmed on an OpenAI page, so this lexicon makes no claim about it. Rank Sniper scores whether a record is complete enough for these surfaces to use; it does not connect a store to any of them.

LX-52Industry termSourced · 5

Agentic commerce

AlsoAgent-led checkout

Agentic commerce is buying and selling in which an AI agent acts for the buyer — building a cart, checking out, paying — through protocols the merchant’s systems implement.

Field notes2 notes · 5 related · 5 sources

Two open protocols are documented. The Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), developed by Stripe and OpenAI, is “open source and community-designed under the Apache 2.0 license”; OpenAI’s Agentic Checkout Spec lets merchants run checkout inside ChatGPT while keeping orders and payments on their own stack. The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), announced by Google on 11 January 2026 and co-developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart, covers discovery through post-purchase support and is also Apache 2.0.

Shopify describes Agentic Storefronts as a sales channel in the Shopify admin that connects a merchant’s products to AI shopping platforms. Rank Sniper implements neither protocol. Several experimental registry checks take their pass conditions from ACP’s feed sections; none is scored today.

LX-53Industry termSourced · 3

Product feed

AlsoShopping feed · Catalog feed

A product feed is a structured file of product records — ID, title, description, link, image, price, availability, identifiers — submitted to a shopping surface so it can list them.

Field notes2 notes · 5 related · 3 sources

Google Merchant Center requires id, title (up to 150 characters), description (up to 5,000), link, image_link, price and availability; it strongly recommends gtin and requires mpn where there is no GTIN. OpenAI’s product feed specification accepts JSONL or Google-compatible TSV/CSV, requires the same core fields plus brand and a gtin or mpn, and uses flags to control search and checkout eligibility.

Per Shopify, its Catalog infers categories, extracts attributes and consolidates variants for Agentic Storefronts. Rank Sniper does not generate or submit a feed today; its automatic fix class is designed to publish through its own metafield namespace, structured data or feed.

A SKU is the merchant’s own identifier for a variant — in Shopify, “a case-sensitive identifier for the product variant in the shop” — optional, but needed to connect a fulfilment service.

Unlike a GTIN, a SKU means nothing outside the store; its job is to be stable. Rank Sniper’s composite passes a product only when every variant carries a non-empty SKU (weight 12); the same check counts in the AIO pillar (14) and in the transactability sub-score.

/products.json

Alsoproducts.json · Storefront products endpoint

/products.json is a public storefront endpoint Shopify stores serve that returns product records as JSON; Shopify does not document it, so it may change without notice.

Field notes2 notes · 5 related · 1 source

Shopify’s documented storefront API for a single product is the Ajax Product API (/products/{handle}.js); /products.json is described only by third parties. Rank Sniper’s free scan reads it because it is what a public client can reach, paginating in store order and spreading its sample across the catalogue rather than reading only the first, best-kept page.

Rank Sniper observes fields such as title, handle, body_html, product_type, vendor, tags, variants with sku and grams, options, images and updated_at. Its image objects carry no alt text, so alt coverage is measured from product-page HTML instead. A robots.txt rule disallowing /products.json stops the catalogue read, and the scan with it.

robots.txt.liquid is the Shopify theme template, kept in templates/, that renders a store’s /robots.txt; adding it is how a merchant changes Shopify’s default rules.

It exposes the robots, group, rule, user_agent and sitemap Liquid objects, and Shopify strongly recommends building on them rather than replacing the defaults, which it updates to keep current.
